Vijayakanth dies, the actor and leader of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), passed away at a Chennai hospital on Thursday. He had been on ventilator support following a positive Covid-19 diagnosis.

Actor and DMDK chief Vijayakanth, aged 71, succumbed to illness at a private hospital in Chennai on Thursday. His demise followed a period of ventilator support, initiated after he tested positive for Covid-19, according to his party. However, the hospital’s official statement cited pneumonia as the primary cause.

The hospital’s communication stated, “Captain Vijayakanth was on ventilatory support following his admission for pneumonia. Despite the best efforts of medical staff, he passed away in the morning on 28th December 2023.”

Vijayakanth had been admitted to the hospital on Tuesday for a routine health check-up. Contrary to the subsequent turn of events, his party had initially declared him to be in good health, assuring his return home after the completion of tests.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has declared that the DMDK leader will receive a funeral ceremony with full state honors.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his condolences in a social media post, expressing deep sorrow at the demise of his “close friend” Vijayakanth. Modi stated on the platform, “Extremely saddened by the passing away of Thiru Vijayakanth Ji. A legend of the Tamil film world, his charismatic performances captured the hearts of millions. As a political leader, he was deeply committed to public service, leaving a lasting impact on Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.”

He went on to say, “His passing leaves a void that will be hard to fill. He was a close friend, and I fondly recall my interactions with him over the years. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with his family, fans, and numerous followers. Om Shanti.”

Having been admitted to a hospital on November 20, the DMDK chief received treatment for a respiratory illness during his stay. Vijayakanth’s prominent presence in the public sphere is characterized by his successful stint in the film industry, where he starred in 154 movies, followed by his entry into the realm of politics.

As the founder of the DMDK Vijayakanth dies, he held the position of Member of Legislative Assembly twice, representing the constituencies of Virudhachalam and Rishivandiyam. The pinnacle of his political career came when he assumed the role of Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from 2011 to 2016.

In recent times, concerns about Vijayakanth’s health prompted him to take a step back from active political involvement.
